P. paraguayensis is very similar to P. filigera with the same iconic see-through body and overall shape making it difficult to differentiate the two, especially when the latter is not mature or settled into its environment. The main visual difference between the two species is that P. paraguayensis lacks the iconic red color present in the fins of P. filigera .
